(LOS ANGELES) – Today, City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto urged Angelenos who choose to engage in protest to do so peacefully, and with respect for the City, its residents, neighbors, businesses, properties, values and communities. The notice was issued to coincide with the “No Kings Day” protests taking place across the nation.
“As the City continues to witness heightened protests regarding the actions of ICE and the presence of federal agents and military, please be assured that the right to peacefully protest is protected under the First Amendment and upheld by this Office,” said Hydee Feldstein Soto, Los Angeles City Attorney. “However, if those activities escalate beyond lawful speech, expression and assembly so as to threaten public safety, disrupt order, escalate into violence, or involve the commission of a crime, law enforcement, including this Office, will take action to arrest and prosecute those responsible.”
Effective June 10, 2025, the City imposed a curfew from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am every day until further notice covering nearly all of downtown Los Angeles. That means that even peaceful protests are prohibited during those hours in the area of the curfew. The use of fireworks, rocks, liquid canisters, or any other dangerous objects to threaten or harm others, especially uniformed officers, has no place in any protests, is strictly prohibited and will be prosecuted. Throwing any item at another person, particularly an item that can strike with deadly force is a crime, and anyone who engages in such conduct or other criminal behavior such as tagging, vandalism, looting, theft, assault, battery, violating the curfew, or failure to follow orders from police or other peace officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
In light of the use of fireworks during these protests and the upcoming 4th of July holiday, remember that all fireworks, including those designated “safe and sane,” are illegal in the City of Los Angeles.
